YVR has several ground-transportation choices. The right one depends on destination, arrival time, passenger count, luggage and whether you want an on-demand ride or a vehicle reserved in advance.
For many travellers going from YVR to downtown Vancouver, the Canada Line is the simplest public-transport choice when luggage is manageable and the hotel is near a station. Taxis and rideshare provide direct curb-to-destination travel. A pre-arranged private car or larger commercial vehicle becomes more useful when the trip involves substantial luggage, a family or group, a long-distance destination, a defined meeting arrangement, or a vehicle selected before arrival.

After collecting checked luggage, follow airport signs for the transportation mode you have chosen. Canada Line access is from the terminal complex. YVR has designated taxi stands and designated rideshare pickup areas. Travellers using a pre-arranged commercial operator should follow the meeting instructions supplied by that operator rather than assuming the pickup process is the same as a taxi or rideshare.
Canada Line is particularly practical for downtown and Richmond trips when travellers can move their own bags and the final destination is convenient to a station. YVR states that passengers leaving the airport on Canada Line are subject to the Canada Line AddFare in addition to the applicable transit fare. The airport also notes that the line is accessible by elevator. Very late or early travel needs a schedule check; YVR identifies the N10 NightBus as an overnight public-transit option when Canada Line is closed.
Airport taxis operate from designated stands. YVR currently uses zone fares for trips departing the airport to specified zones, while trips to YVR are metered. Trips outside the zone map are also metered. This makes a taxi easy to understand for many direct trips, but a party with more luggage than a vehicle can safely hold may need a larger or additional vehicle.
YVR currently identifies Uber and Lyft as authorized ride-app providers and lists pickup areas at International Arrivals Level 2, Domestic Arrivals Level 2 and the South Terminal. The airport advises passengers to collect their luggage before requesting the ride. Available vehicle classes and the quoted price are shown through the provider's app.
A private transfer is reserved before the flight rather than requested after reaching the curb. Depending on the operator and service booked, the experience can include flight monitoring, an inside-terminal meet-and-greet with the passenger's name on a sign, luggage assistance, a professionally dressed chauffeur and bottled water. These features are not universal, so confirm exactly what is included. For larger groups, YVR specifically recommends coordinating with an approved commercial vehicle operator and describes a pre-arranged group-pickup process.
YVR states that Canada Line, city bus service and taxis serving the airport have accessible options. Accessible rental vehicles can also be arranged with advance notice. Travellers who need luggage help can separately consider YVR's licensed porter service, which can move luggage between baggage carousels and curbside transportation areas.
Start with the final address, then count people and luggage. Add the arrival time, mobility needs and any onward reservation such as a cruise sailing or Whistler hotel check-in. A solo traveller near a Canada Line station has a very different decision from six travellers carrying skis and suitcases to Whistler.
There is no single best option. Compare the final destination, passenger count, luggage, schedule, mobility needs and whether a reserved vehicle is valuable for this particular trip.
Advance booking is most useful for fixed schedules, larger groups, special vehicle requirements and long-distance trips. On-demand options may be sufficient for simple local travel.
Tell the provider the number of passengers plus full-size suitcases, carry-ons and oversized items. Passenger capacity and luggage capacity are not the same.
